TKE offers extensive leadership education opportunities, including: Regional Leadership Conferences, The Charles R. Walgreen TKE Leadership Academy, Conclave (our biennial fraternity‐wide conference), and grants for programs such as the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) and Futures Quest, as well as many more.

      News

Aconcagua is the tallest mountain outside of the Himalayas, rising to 22,842 ft making it the tallest mountain in the Southern and Western hemispheres. Over winter break I had the opportunity to climb this sentinel. My journey began with a 37 kilometer trek into base camp, 13,776 ft, along the Vacas River Valley. The scenery was very martian, almost completely devoid of life except for condors and caracaras. Our climbing party stayed in base camp for 4 days, including Christmas, to better acclimatize to the high elevations. We then proceeded to piggyback up the mountain. Because of the large amount of cold weather gear, we had to carry gear up to each camp twice.

The weather cooperated for the most part despite typical night time and morning temperatures being below zero. However, the wind did howl, typical gusts were around 20-30mph but they reached up to 60mph. We reached high camp, 19,800 ft, on Jan. 2. The next day at 5am we woke up to start our attempt at the summit.

Wearing literally every piece of clothing we had, the climbing was slow and we reached the top around 2:00pm. Out of an original group of 10 only 2 other climbers and I made it to the top. By far this climb was the most physically strenuous activity I have ever done. Dealing with the altitude proved to be the most difficult task. The lack of oxygen as well as altitude sickness plagues every climber on the mountain including the guides. Overall, it was the trip of a lifetime which I would recommend to anyone seeking a challenge.

Frater Chernin has done great things for our fraternity, he coordindated our RUSH last year! Winter 2010 rush information. Questions? Contact us on facebook or on twitter.
